Renaming of ADEF (11/03/2017)
After intense debates a clear majority of our members decided to rename our association. After nearly forty years, our long-standing name “Arbeitskreis Deutsche England-Forschung” (ADEF) will be replaced by “Arbeitskreis Großbritannien-Forschung” (AGF). Likewise, our English name is altered into "German Association for British Studies".
The German Association for British Studies brings together historians and political scientists who conduct research and teach about the United Kingdom, the British Empire and the Commonwealth.
The association, originally named “Arbeitskreis Deutsche England-Forschung” (ADEF), was initiated by Gustav Schmidt, Professor of Political Science at Bochum University, and his colleagues in 1981. His idea was to establish a forum for young researchers to collaborate in the field of British studies, which was relatively underdeveloped at the time. Subsequently, the forum evolved into a thriving organisation with over 150 active members, holding annual conferences, producing publication series and awarding outstanding postgraduate theses. In 2017, the association was renamed to “Arbeitskreis Großbritannien-Forschung” (AGF).
