Goals

The Arbeitskreis Deutsche England Forschung or ADEF brings together historians and political scientists whose areas of research and teaching include the British Isles, the Empire and Commonwealth. The initiative to start ADEF came from Gustav Schmidt, profesor of Political Science at Bochum University. Back in 1981, his aim was to network his colleagues in History, along with those researching, still often perfunctorily and isolatedly, in the area of British studies. By nurturing a new generation of researchers, ADEF would complement the similar efforts of the German Historical Institute in London (GHIL).

This networking, the modest hope was, would affect merely the few researchers and resources mobilisable within the then West Germany. But the ensuing decades have seen ADEF emerging as a thriving organisation with over 150 active members holding annual conferences, producing its own publication-series and sponsoring an annual prize for outstanding postgraduate dissertations.

ADEF's publications are not confined to the proceedings of those conferences: it also includes independent monographs, notably dissertations. All are available to members at reduced price. If you are interested in contributing to the series, send your typescript to its editor, Frau Prof. Dr. Ursula Lehmkuhl (jfkulehm@zedat.fu-berlin.de).
